It was a good weekend of bowl games at Giants Stadium, some of the games were very memorable. My favorite game was the Penns Grove-Willingboro affair, a tale of two games with several memorable plays. Add in the fact that one or both of these teams could be back next year. The Sayreville-Williamstown game was also a good one and my heart goes out to the Williamstown punter. It was great to watch Mater Dei’s Malik Ingram run the ball for the second time in three weeks. All he does is get yardage and he doesn’t waste time getting it. One good thing about the bowl games is people like me can see several teams we would not get to see during the year……….Bergen County teams did very well over the weekend, going 4-1, with the lone loss coming to another Bergen County team……….It cracks me up to see a certain coach touting his team’s schedule as the toughest public school schedule in the state when it is nowhere near that. In fact, he had to have his arm twisted to not play one of the worst teams in the state. He has done similar things in the past to avoid playing a good team and stick with the bad team on his schedule. It has been years since his team has played a tough schedule and everybody knows it. He’s a guy who likes to have it both ways, though I give him credit where it’s due: he’s a very good football coach……….The Sayreville defense looked like a bunch of junkyard dogs in their game against Williamstown. Players with good games were Jayvis Rayside, Antwan Golson, and Conner Anthony……….Speaking of Williamstown, I enjoyed the team’s entrance to the field before the game, with the band banging that drum, similar to the Florida State Seminole war chant……….Another good team nickname is the Shawnee Renegades……….One of the interesting renditions I heard from a band last weekend was the Delran’s playing Stevie Wonder’s Superstition and Styx’s Renegade. I also liked the Willingboro band called the Mystical Sound Machine……….Speaking to some Willingboro fans, I discovered a Chimera is a mythical creature and the team name is pronounced as the KY-merras……….Hasbrouck Heights is the first team to win the North Jersey Group 1 bowl game and also have the honor of winning the first NJIC championship game……….Getting into pro football, with the Giants losing to the Eagles, at least we don’t have to hear about their playoff push with the season they have had……….I can’t stand when people talk about what a tough schedule an NFL team has heading into the season. If a team plays well, they have a chance to win and if they don’t play well, they probably lose. In addition, things change quickly in the NFL: Jacksonville had a very good record last year and this year, they are 3-8; while heading into last year, people would have said the Giants were a tough game based on the 11-5 record from the year before……….Uniform Front: The Good – the all-red of Willingboro with the navy blue helmet. The Bad: Moorestown with black numbers on black jerseys. The Ugly – Pemberton with green jersey, black pants, and white helmet……… There is a possibility of rain for the last two bowl games this Saturday and if that happens, it would be the sixth consecutive weekend of rain this season, including every weekend in the playoffs……….It was fun watching Ramapo play this year, especially when their offense was clicking on all cylinders and AJ Wingfield is arguably the best quarterback in Bergen County ……….While on the subject of Ramapo, a good running back to watch this weekend was Max Jackson of Summit……….Another guy who was a man on the field was Penns Grove’s Tyreek Brown, the TE/RB/QB/LB for the Red Devils. One good quality about him is he wrestles and every team needs a couple of them. Brown made it the the state semi-finals last year at 220 and eventually placed in fifth place……….I rarely talk about high school football kickers, but Angelo Guglielmello of St. Joe’s (Montvale) set a state record last weekend for most points by a kicker. He is known as The Shoe because his father and grandfather are shoemakers……….That’s all for this week; I will return next week with some more bull!
