Post 966 – Bull Session Week Four

There was more buzz for the Bergen Catholic-Don Bosco game than in recent years; at least for me, personally. It is easily one of the best rivalries, very close to being the best. The top rivalry is Phillipsburg-Easton and unless you’ve been to one of those games, don’t be critical. Some may disqualify it because Easton is across the river in Pennsylvania, but both schools would rather win that game than a state championship. I’ve been to one game and it is an unbelievable atmosphere and both schools have very good bands that add to the game….One thing I mentioned in the Catholic school poll was somebody putting a flamethrower to the all-black uniforms Bergen Catholic wore. If someone teaches me how to operate one, I will volunteer to do the honors. I gave Bosco a thumbs down for their gray jerseys and maroon pants and I give Bergen multiple thumbs downs for those uniforms….While they don’t have a big, quality win, Pennsauken has scored 175 points in four games to go with a 4-0 record….Old Tappan is 4-0 and has pitched three shutouts in four games, only allowing six to Paramus in the opener. I can’t wait for their game with Ramapo in two weeks….What else is new? Willingboro has a tough schedule. Currently 1-3, their losses are to undefeated teams in Ramapo and Timber Creek, plus always tough St. Joe’s (Hammonton)….I don’t know how far back Piscataway is, but they are 2-2 with a loss to South Brunswick, which has coach Joe Goerge returning after three years….Bosco’s Nick Minicucci has come a long way since I saw in last year’s regular season game against Bergen Catholic. He is playing with a lot more confidence and is a threat running and throwing….The Giants suffered their first loss the other night after a surprising 2-0 start. The G-men are still a long way off to being a big contender. I have no opinion as to whether Daniel Jones can be the quarterback of the future. He does appear to be tightly wound and looks as if he could use an ice cube down his back….The class of the division at this point is the Eagles with Jalen Hurts looking like their quarterback of the future….Another game I saw last weekend was Ridgewood’s 12-7 win over Passaic Tech. It was an enjoyable game with two good defenses with Ridgewood making the plays that mattered. Their top player appears to be Cole Conneen, an outside linebacker who was in on the action all night….Two top games this weekend were Bernards beating Delaware Valley, 17-14, and Caldwell beating West Essex, 16-13, in a apple of neighboring schools….Congratulations to Aaron Judge for hitting his 61st home run, tying Roger Marris just a little while ago….One web site that broadcasts games on YouTube is Morris Sussex Sports and they are scheduled to broadcast nine games this weekend. That’s all for now. I will be back with more bull next week!
