Post 945 – Wood-Ridge 23 Cresskill 6

Wood-Ridge scored points in each of the four quarters to beat Cresskill, 23-6.

First Quarter: The Blue Devils opened the scoring when Braden Negro found an open Leo Ramirez down the right sideline for a score of approximately 50 yards with 7:35 left in the first quarter.

Second Quarter: On the second quarter’s opening play, a Cresskill punt was partially blocked with Wood-Ridge taking possession on their own 37. Cresskill recovered a Negro fumble at midfield, but a penalty nullified the play and the Blue Devils kept possession. They made it count when Negro scored from 18 yards out to make it 14-0 with 7:34 left in the half. Cresskill moved the ball down the field behind a couple of completions from Robert Feulner to Cody Song and a 15-yard penalty. But with 2:30 remaining, a Feulner pass bounced off his receiver and into the arms of Mike Marchitelli for an interception. Cresskill had the ball again, but Ramirez intercepted and returned the ball to the Cresskill 37 with 22 seconds left in the half. A field goal attempt fell short as the half expired.

Third Quarter: Antonio Loyola intercepted for Wood-Ridge and returned it to the Cresskill 39. Two minutes later, the Blue Devils scored on a 2-yard pass to Nick Chromey. Cresskill moved the ball late in the quarter and was on the board when Feulner scored on a 4-yard run with 14 seconds left in the quarter.

Fourth Quarter: Wood-Ridge moved the ball down the field and a 23-yard field goal by Kledji Elezaj made it 23-6 with five minutes left.

Wood-Ridge had some good performances by Ramirez and Elezaj.  Ramirez showed good hands for receptions and an interception. Elezaj had consistent penetration on defense throughout the game and added the fourth quarter field goal. Loyola, and Negro also turned in good performances for the evening.

Cresskill had opportunities to make the game closer, but the interceptions killed them. In the end it would not have been enough to win the game.
