Post 803 – Holy Spirit 28 Hudson Catholic 0

Holy Spirit 28 Hudson Catholic 0

The Holy Spirit defense scored two touchdowns and had six interceptions plus a fumble recovery in beating Hudson Catholic, 28-0. The offense featured a strong running game behind Trevor Cohen’s 191 yards.

First Quarter: Hudson Catholic opened the game with the ball and fumbled on their fifth play, as Mike Francisco returned it 30 yards for a touchdown. Two drives later, Trevor Cohen ran 39 yards to the 11-yard line, followed by Gavin Roman catching an 11-yard touchdown pass on the first play of the second quarter.

Second Quarter: After being forced to punt, Hudson Catholic was in trouble when the snap sailed over the punter’s head and Holy Spirit recovered on the 19-yard line. But a 29-yard field goal attempt was no good and Hudson Catholic dodged a bullet. With 35 seconds left, Eric Roman returned an interception 30 yards for a touchdown and a 20-0 Holy Spirit lead.

Third Quarter: Holy Spirit opened the half with a successful onside kick, giving them the ball on the Hudson 45. Cohen broke off a 37-yard run, followed by a Gavin Roman touchdown of eight yards. The two-point conversion succeeded and the Spartans had a 28-0 lead. Hudson Catholic went seventeen plays on the ensuing drive, but George Coles intercepted on the 2-yard line.

Fourth Quarter: Holy Spirit, behind a 63-yard run by Cohen, drove to the 5, but a fourth down pass fell incomplete. Hudson Catholic had two more possessions and an interception by Michael Pena sealed the shutout for Spirit.

Summary: The Holy Spirit defense held Hudson Catholic to 96 yards of total offense, minus-4 in the first half. They also had six interceptions and a fumble recovery and that’s difficult to win if you are Hudson Catholic. Cohen had 191 yards rushing on 15 carries, including runs of 37, 63, and 39 yards, playing both quarterback and running back. Gavin Roman had two touchdowns, one running and one receiving.

Hudson Catholic’s bright spot was running back Jacob Rodriguez. He had a few nice runs when he had room, but was surrounded by several Spirit defenders as soon as he had the handoff. One play in particular was an elusive and physical run that lost one yard. Give him room to run and he can hurt a team.
