Post 779 – Bull Session Week Eight

Bull Session Week Eight

We are getting into the stretch run before the playoffs and I always preferred having four groups in the public schools, as opposed to the current five. There are too many average and below-average teams in the playoffs, watering down the field. I didn’t like it when they increased to five back then and I don’t like it now….If the playoffs began this weekend, Wayne Hills would not be included. They are 2-5 and don’t have many seniors. In fact, when the current seniors were freshmen, they had a very low turnout and this is what we are seeing today. That said, their losses are by these scores: 38-37, 13-7 in OT, 21-16, 13-7 in OT (second time) and 21-14….I mentioned last week how Watchung Hills was winless with many competitive losses. Last weekend they beat Monroe, 42-14 to get off the schneid….One of the cool names among high school football players is Dante Del Duca of Haddonfield….I was pleasantly surprised at Bergen Catholic that their pregame invocation was approximately thirty seconds, much better than the two minute one at Don Bosco. These players are restless as it is and we are asking them to stand through the National Anthem and an invocation. Keep it short and to the point….Last Thursday night’s game with Clifton and Eastside is the best game I have seen, so far, this year….Since their opening game loss to Millville in Ocean City, Union is 6-0, outsourcing opponents 213 to 57….There are several good games to choose from on Saturday if you are in South Jersey. Woodtown visits Paulsboro, Salem is at Penns Grove, Camden travels to Cedar Creek, and St. Joe’s (Hammonton) hosts Washington Township….With hockey season started, the Rangers just won tonight in Nashville, meaning they have more wins than the Giants and Jets combined….Also, the Knicks opened their season with a thrilling double-overtime win, matching the Giants and Jets individual win totals. That’s how bad it’s been for those two teams….And speaking of hockey, the expansion Seattle team cannot have a worse name than the one they have: the Kraken – it’s some kind of sea monster….This weekend, I get to see Ramapo and Seton Hall Prep, teams I have yet to see this year….After starting 0-2, Willingboro has won four straight….Interesting tidbit on the Paulsboro vs. Woodstown game: both have only one loss and both are by a 6-0 margin….Woodrow Wilson scored a big win over Holy Spirit last week and Mike Estremera intercepted three passes, returning one for a touchdown….I have always said teams can have all the stars they want, but every team needs one or two wrestlers on the team….Bergen Catholic has Ryan Butler as their top back, but junior Saeed St. Fleur has also been impressive in a part-time role. Many in his shoes would have transferred out because they would be stuck behind Butler, but St. Fleur has made the most of his opportunities….That’s all for this week; I will return next week with some more bull!
