Post 74 – HS Football – Preview: Delbarton

2017 In Review:  The Green Wave was 3-8, losing to Bergen Catholic in the Non-Public Group 4 semi-finals after beating Seton Hall Prep.  They scored 214 points for a 19.45 average, while allowing 332 for a 30.18 average.  Wins included Mater Dei and Hudson Catholic, while losses included St. Joe’s (Montvale), Pope John, Don Bosco, DePaul, and Paramus Catholic.

Graduation Losses:  OL/DL Will Andersen – Navy, TE/DL Troy Zgombic – William & Mary, RB/DB Anthony Siragusa – Villanova, DB Kevin Sawtell – Gettysburg, OL Drake Mead – Williams (Mass.), RB/LB Cole Kreshpane – Duke for wrestling, QB Miles Leniw – Tale for lacrosse, DB Paul Spada – Miami for track, DB Tommy Schelling – Lehigh for lacrosse

Offense:  Delbarton runs a multiple spread and returns five starters.  Starting at quarterback will be sophomore Cole Freeman (6-1, 195), but senior Jake Kopeld (6-2, 185) will also play.  Running back has sophomore Gary Lewis (5-10, 175), junior Andrew Reale (5-9, 165), junior Daniel Papantonis (5-8, 175), and sophomore Azarai Lewis (5-10, 150), with Gary Lewis seeing time last year.

The receiving corps has junior Lukas Ungar (6-4, 220) back at tight end, while senior Mike Jarmolowich (6-2, 190) returns at wide receiver.  The other wide receivers will be seniors Greg Goetz (6-3, 180), Jack Coffey (6-4, 170), and Brent McGrath (6-1, 170).

Three return to the offensive line: senior right tackle Will Smart (6-4, 255), senior right guard George Johnson (6-2, 220), and senior left tackle James Donini (6-5, 240).  Left guard belongs to junior Harrison Ganton (6-1, 255), while center will be either junior Danny Hajjar (6-1, 240) or senior Michael Ricciardelli (6-0, 205).  Also rotating in along the line will be senior Chris Siegert (6-1, 210) and junior Jack Readlinger (6-3, 200).

Defense:  The Green Wave play a 3-3 stack and return four starters.  Smart returns at nose guard, where he will be spelled by Siegert, who saw time.  At end, Readlinger played and he will rotate with Ungar and Donini.

The three inside linebackers return in Johnson, Jarmolowich, and junior Sean Link (5-11, 195).  The outside linebacker will be sophomore Ben Romano (6-2, 181).  Getting time at inside linebacker will be sophomore RJ Martini (5-11, 165), Ricciardelli, and sophomore Dylan Miccolis (5-10, 195).

Cornerback will be a rotation of Gary Lewis, Reale, Azarai Lewis, junior Isaiah Washington (6-2, 170), and freshman Trey Watkins (5-11, 150).  The safeties will be Kopeld, senior Joe Kearns (6-1, 170), McGrath, and junior Zac Ambielli (6-0, 160).

Special Teams:  Kopeld returns as kicker and punter, while Gary Lewis and Reale will be the return men.

Recruits:  Smart verballed to Wake Forest and Johnson has several 1-AA offers.  Jarmolowich has offers from Army, Navy, Holy Cross, Colgate, and others.  Other seniors may play D3.

In the junior class, Ungar has offers from Stanford, Michigan, Wisconsin, Rutgers, and Boston College.

Concerns:  Youth and inexperience.
