It was great to see Willingboro come up from South Jersey to play Ramapo last Saturday and the game was a very good one with the potential game-winning, two-point conversion coming with no time left. The Ramapo receiver caught the ball just a few inches out of bounds to give Willingboro the win…..Willingboro is Group 1 and had not played since Week Two against Ramapo…..I also covered the Lenape-Cherokee game on nj.com and I was able to see some South Jersey football and it is very good….Another great name is Benny Babula, the star of the 1939 Garfield team that was crowned National Champions in 1939…..The Lenape kicker, Dylan Shank, who kicked the winning field goal against Cherokee in overtime has the last name you don’t want if you are a kicker…..It’s another good week with ranked teams playing one another. In the Catholics, there is #3 Bergen Catholic at #2 Delbarton…..There are crossovers with Catholics playing Group 3-4-5 Publics: #4 St. Joe’s (Montvale) at #3 Cherokee, #6 DePaul at #7 Ocean City, #1 Lenape at #7 Holy Spirit, #8 Donovan Catholic at #2 Wall, and #11 St. Joe’s (Hammonton) at #9 Hammonton….In Public Groups 3-4-5, we have #24 Freehold Boro at (#5 Rumson-Fair Haven…..A public crossover has #9 Lenape Valley In Groups 1-2 at #23 Sparta in 3-4-5…..The Public Groups 1-2 have #3 Paulsboro at #2 Salem, #23 Waldwick at #11 Becton, #16 Verona at #22 Boonton, and #24 Hanover Park at #19 Mahwah…..If it was up to me, I would not have a high school athlete having any scholarship offers until he or she has completed his or her sophomore season. Offering freshmen and eighth graders is out of hand…..In case anybody is wondering what happened to 1-4 Manalapan, they lost by a total of 33 points, including one game in overtime: undefeated Colts Neck in overtime by 7 – 5-1 Freehold Boro, 14-12 – Mater Dei by 17…..Pet Peeves: I am watching the Seattle Seahawks play the Arizona Cardinals and they just had a replay that took several minutes. The rule was meant to overturn egregiously blown calls and that should be quick and easy. Instead they take several minutes to determine the outcome and it should not take that long. If it was up to me, I would have a clock counting down from 45 seconds and if they can’t make a decision when the zeroes are on the clock, the play stands. As Greg Toal would say, it’s as simple as that…..Speaking of Willingboro, it’s good to see when a coach wears a suit, something that Head Coach Steve Everette does…..I will be at the NJIC championship game that features Becton hosting Waldwick at 6:00. I will be there by 6:00, something I didn’t do last week, thinking the game was at 7:00…..Don Bosco surprised many by beating Bergen Catholic, but after watching that game, it was obvious Bosco had more energy than Bergen and sophomore receiver Ethan Acevedo is a very good athlete. And I almost forgot: linebacker Timmy Hinspeter is a very good one…..Last weekend was the fiftieth anniversary of the Marshall football team’s plane crashing and killing everyone on board. This is what eventually became the movie We are Marshall…..These may be the last games I see this year over the weekend with new restrictions being imposed by our governor. While there were no playoffs and some schools did not play many games, at least we were able to get some football…..That’s all for this week. I will be back next week with some more bull!
