One item that needs to be checked regularly this year is which games are cancelled for COVID reasons and which games are rescheduled…..One school that looks like the reliable school to reschedule is Hun School, which has St. Joe’s (Montvale) this Saturday after playing Cherokee last week as a replacement game…..Congratulations to Wildwood for snapping a long losing streak last weekend…..Games to watch this weekend in the SFC are Lenape Valley at Newton and Madison at Mountain Lakes, while the NJIC features Hawthorne at Glen Rock…..Tonight features the Battle of Eastside/East Side, as Paterson Eastside visits Newark East Side…..One team that is having a very good year to date is Winslow at 3-0, equaling last year’s win total by allowing only 12 points, including two shutouts. Kudos to Coach Ken Scott…..I discovered last week that a big reason I choose a game is I can learn something from a specific game. I could have gone to see Bergen Catholic-Paramus Catholic, but I wasn’t going to learn anything. I went to West Orange-Montclair and the score was 35-6, but I learned about both teams…..Bergen Catholic, by the way, had a nice tribute to the late AD, Jack McGovern, naming the field in his honor…..Pet Peeves: twice last weekend, I went to a convenience store on the way to a game to pick up a couple of snacks because many concession stands are closed at the games. I pick up a couple of quick and easy items, only to be second in line to a seven-letter-word-that-begins-with-A who is purchasing every different lottery ticket known to mankind and taking up valuable time…..While not a pet peeve, I can do without Senior Day/Night before a game. If they want to do it, have the senior trot out on the field to be introduced by himself. These exhibitions are distractions for the teams and sometimes an exhibition for some parents who want to bask in their kid’s glory. In addition, they’re BORING!…..WJFL games to watch this weekend are Lenape at Rancocas Valley, Cherokee at Shawnee, Haddonfield at Willingboro, and Washington Township at Winslow…..With the Ivy division of the SFC being created for struggling programs, there have been some exciting games. Last week, Fort Lee beat Bergen Tech, 37-34, making it exciting for whoever showed up and how many were able show up…..Watching Clifton last week, I was impressed by their team defense and they will be a challenge to anyone who plays them. If you go to a Clifton game, a must-see is the Clifton Mustang Marching Band, arguably New Jersey’s best…..Uniforms the good: Wayne Valley uniforms that give us the traditional North Carolina, light blue look…..Speaking of Wayne Valley, John Testa is one hard nosed running back and he’s also a very good linebacker…..A lineman at Northern Highlands I like is junior Center/D-tackle Charlie Johnson, a feisty SOB…..Another good uniform is the Becton maroon-and-white look. It’s simplicity is an asset…..A colleague joked last weekend that Becton is the only good team in East Rutherford this year…..As for those other two teams, I would recommend that the Giants’ Jabrill Peppers not do flips when he has a bad ankle and I don’t see how keeping Adam Gase the whole year benefits the Jets…..The double overtime game between Washington Township and Kingsway, won by Kingsway must have been a good one…..I noticed Holy Cross is being coached by TJ Maderia, son of former Holy Cross and current Burlington Township coach Tom Maderia…..After losing last week, 70-3, North Bergen rebounded with a win…..Another sad story is how Roxbury has fallen…..BCC games to watch are Phillipsburg at Watchung Hills and Woodbridge at Cranford…..Shore Conference games to see are Colts Neck at Freehold Township, Middletown South at Rumson-Fair Haven, and Long Branch at Mater Dei …..That’s all for today. I will be back next week with some more bull!
