Lakeland broke a 14-14 tie with a touchdown in the fourth quarter to beat Westwood, 21-14.
First Quarter: Westwood’s first scoring drive featured two successful fourth down conversions, including a 13-yard touchdown pass on fourth-and-three from Ian Borgersen to Jack Dugan. Lakeland came back when Joshua Paduani went 19 yards for a touchdown one minute into the second quarter. The two-point conversion was stopped short of the goal line and Westwood was still in front, 7-6. Key plays on the drive were a 20 yard run by Paduani and a 30-yard pass from Todd Geyer to JR Jacela.
Second Quarter: The teams traded interceptions, the second by Westwood’s Joey Giordano on the Cardinal 24. This set up a second touchdown pass from Borgersen to Dugan, this time from 35 yards. Lakeland tied things just before the half when Geyer found David Hammerle for a touchdown pass.
Third Quarter: There was little action in this quarter with the notable play being a strip sack by Lakeland’s TJ McCormack at midfield that the Lancers recovered. Lakeland had to punt and that pinned Westwood on their 13.
Fourth Quarter: Lakeland took the lead when Geyer found Carter Pagan in the end zone for the touchdown. Westwood moved the ball when Dugan took a rugby punt and kept going to the Lakeland 35 for a first down. On fourth down, Lakeland was called for pass interference, giving Westwood a first down on the 20, but later fumbled with Lakeland recovering on their 11. Westwood had another chance, but a sack by Vincent Anderson and Sean Mena gave the ball to the Lancers. After a couple of first downs, Lakeland ran out the clock.
