Post 436 – Bull Session: Week Two

This Friday night is another game between Bergen Catholic and Don Bosco, one of New Jersey’s best rivalries. The way it looks, both of these teams need a win this week in order to keep pace and not fall behind…..Bergen’s last game was a loss to St. Peter’s Prep and they have one of the up-and-coming quarterbacks in junior Tahj Bullock, who can hurt a team running and throwing. Two sophomore running backs in the game who impressed were Prep’s Paul Lefkowitz and BC’s Ryan Butler…..Mountain Lakes and Mahwah have had barburners this year and last. Mountain Lakes won, 35-32 last Friday night after Mahwah won in overtime last year, 49-48…..Another game that has been crazy the last two years is Toms River North and Manalapan, with TRN holding off a late Manalapan rally to win, 42-40, after winning, 15-14, last year…..Two schools play a very tough schedule for a school their size’ one is Carteret, a Group 3 that plays only one Group 3 school. Their schedule includes two Catholics, two Group 5’s, and four Group 4’s. Next year they enter the combined Greater Middlesex Conference and Mid-State 38 conference and they should be seeing more Group 3 opponents…..Willingboro, the other, is a Group 1 school playing only one Group1, one struggling Catholic school, four Group 2’s, two Group 3’s, and one Group 4…..My three number-one ranked teams from last year: Piscataway, Haddonfield, and St. Joe’s (Montvale), are a combined 9-0. Joe’s has the biggest challenge this weekend against Maryland power, St. Frances…..There has been a big effort over the years to make soccer a popular sport, but the popular foreign sport I prefer is rugby. It is more like football than soccer and also more physical. There are similarities and the guys wear little, if any, equipment…..Another wild one this past weekend was Woodrow Wilson beating Delbarton, 48-48…..Lincoln has been involved in two one-point games the last two weeks, splitting the pair: losing to West Side and beating Hoboken…..Thankfully, the Shore Conference upgraded Mater Dei’s schedule, going from small schools to larger publics and St. John Vianney with the Seraphs blowing through their first three opponents, 136-20…..A good game last week was Union beating Westfield, 10-7…..Bad Uniforms: Watching Friday Night Football last week, two strood out: Raritan and Colts Neck. Raritan wears two-tone green and black on both the pants and jersey. Very ugly. Colts Neck had a white jersey with silver numbers on white pants with some kind of green and white design around the knees of their pants. Both are brutally ugly…..At this point, I am trying to figure out the ranking system to seed teams for the playoffs, but I will at some point…..Giants front: With all the heat GM Dave Gettleman has taken from some, but not all, Giant fans, several of this year’s draft picks played well this past Sunday. Obviously, Daniel Jones gets the attention and rightfully so. But others who played well were Dexter Lawrence, DeAndre Baker, Oshane Ximines, Ryan Connelly, and Darius Slayton. Considering Corey Ballantine and Julian Love are not getting regular time, this shaping up to be a very good draft…..That’s all for this week; I will be back with more bull next Wednesday!
