Post 36 – HS Football – Preview: Barnegat

2017 In Review:  The Bengals were 5-5, losing to Overbrook in the South Jersey Group 2 consolation game.  They scored 177 points for a 17.7 average, while allowing 216 for a 21.6 average.  Wins included Shore and losses were to Point Pleasant Boro, Manasquan, and Lakewood.

Graduation Losses:  RB/LB Juan Abraham – Montclair State, OL Brandon Andrews – Montclair State, WR/DB Nico Adorno – Rhode Island – track

Offense:  Barnegat runs a multiple spread, returns nine starters, with senior Brian Finucan (6-3, 192) the incumbent at quarterback.  Seniors return with Charlie Cotton (5-10, 205) at running back and four-year starter Brian Ewan (5-11, 219) at fullback.

Sean Morris (6-3, 228), a senior, is back at tight end and junior Devyn DeFilipo (6-2, 175) returns at wide receiver.  Those in the picture at wide receiver are junior Caleb Schafer (5-7, 162), junior Dominique Dorphin (6-3, 165), sophomore Lawrence Davis (5-10, 150), junior Tyzon Jackson (5-11, 183), junior Aaron Osborn (6-0, 174), and junior Logan Malia (6-1, 170).

Four starters are back on the line: senior Tim Lauterbach (6-1, 268) at center, senior Phil Gogarty (6-2, 276) at right tackle, junior Griffin Jackstadt (6-3, 238) at left tackle, and senior Joe Lauer (6-0, 244) at right guard.  The open left guard has a battle among seniors Eric Feroldi (6-0, 220), Anthony Grimes (6-0, 278), and John Pannone (5-9, 215), with Feroldi the frontrunner.

Defense:  The Bengals run a 4-3 and return nine starters.  Morris returns at end, while Grimes and Pannone are the incumbent tackles.  In the running at the open end are sophomore Robert Armstrong (6-2, 200), Jackstadt, and junior Dominick Aneses (5-9, 175).

The linebackers are all returning starters, with Ewan back for his fourth year at middle linebacker, junior Michael Godfrey (5-8, 181) back on the strong side, and Cotton playing the weak side, moving from cornerback.

Back at cornerback is senior Tristan Porcelli (5-8, 168), with senior Sean Madej (6-0, 181) and junior Matt Scott (5-9, 155) returning at the safeties.  The opposite corner will have either DeFilipo, Dorphin, or junior Isaiah Chesney (5-8, 140).

Special Teams:  Both the kicking game and return game will be decided in camp.

Recruits:  Morris committed to Holy Cross, while Ewan is a four-year starter who is 1-AA/D2.  Grimes, Cotton, Madej, and Gogerty may play D3.

Concerns:  Depth at certain positions.
