Post 2,086 – Bergen Catholic 38 Iona Prep (NY) 7

Bergen Catholic 28 Iona Prep 7

After leading 3-0 into the middle of the second quarter, Bergen Catholic exploded by scoring on five consecutive drives to beat Iona Prep, 38-7. Four of those touchdowns were Dominic Campanile-to-Quincy Porter passes.

First Quarter: Bergen moved the ball on their second drive and went in front on a 33-yard field goal by Guytano Bartolomeo

Second Quarter: With 6:40 left in the quarter, Campanile found Porter on a seam route, and he outraced the Iona Prep defense for a 78-yard touchdown. On the ensuing possession, Naiim Parrish intercepted on the sideline, keeping himself in bounds, on Iona Prep’s 31 and Campanile connected with Porter for a 27-yard score near the right pylon with 5:07 left. Brandon Gomez intercepted for the Crusaders and returned it 31 yards to the Iona Prep 33 with four minutes left. BC moved the ball and capped it off with a 2-yard touchdown run by Kaj Sanders. The score was set up with a 23-yard run by Dante Kain two plays earlier. The Crusaders had the ball with less than one minute left and Campanile connected again with Porter on a play similar to their first score, as Sanders outran the secondary again for a 58-yard score with 11 seconds left.

Second Half: After a punt, Bergen took over on their 47. Campanile wasted no time, finding Luca Cuttita for 43 yards to the 6-yard line and then found Sanders on the left edge of the end zone for a touchdown on the following play. At that point, the game went to a running clock.

Comments: Bergen got untracked after a slow start. They were unstoppable on offense and the defense was stingy. Campanile-to-Porter is becoming a very good combination and one of the state’s best. The Crusaders are hard enough to beat already, but if the offense consistently clicks the way they did on those five consecutive drives, they will be even harder to beat.
