Paramus Catholic 22 Hun 18

 Paramus Catholic scored 15 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to beat Hun, 22-18, on a 30-yard touchdown pass from Walker Snee to Feury Diaz-Rinaldi, followed quickly by an Anthony Lopez interception return for a touchdown. They survived a Hun first-and-goal and ran out the clock.  

First Quarter: On the game’s second play, a shotgun snap sailed over Paramus Catholic quarterback Walker Snee, who was tackled by a host of Hun defenders led by Will Hayes for a safety and a 2-0 Hun lead. The Raiders moved the ball to the PC 21, but consecutive sacks forced a 50-yard field goal attempt that missed. PC’s next drive was set back by another errant shotgun snap to make it 3rd-and-19. Snee found Chukwuma Odoh for 19 yards and a first down. Snee ran for 53 yards on the next play down the left sideline to the 5-yard line, making it first-and-goal. Odoh scored on the next play to PC in front, 7-2. 

Second Quarter: Hun had good field position and completions to Cooper Briehler for 11 yards, and Gavin Toto for 12 brought the ball to the 10-yard line, but three incompletions set up a field goal attempt that was blocked. After Hun picked up a first down late in the quarter, Lukas Prock connected with Briehler for a 40-yard touchdown pass to put the Raiders ahead, 9-7 with three minutes left.  

Third Quarter: On Hun’s second possession of the half, Prock found Ty Locker, and he ran all the way down the left sideline for a 73-yard score, extending the Hun lead to 16-7. After a PC punt, Hun looked ready to break the game open. Prock found JD Teza for 12 yards and Locker for 13 for a first down on the PC aa. On third-and-15, Prock found Tommy Douglas for 12 yards and a fourth-and-3. But Dante Berger dropped a sure touchdown pass on fourth down, turning the ball over to PC on their 4. 

Fourth Quarter: On third-and-10, Snee found Anthony Lopez for 13 yards for a first down to keep the drive alive. Two plays later, Feury Diaz-Rinaldi caught a 10-yard pass, followed by a 10-yard Snee run two plays later. The following play was a 27-yard completion to Lopez on the right sideline to the 34. Three plays later, Snee found Diaz-Rinaldi down the middle in the end zone for a 35-yard touchdown, and PC trailed by two, 16-14. On the ensuing drive, Pock took off for 21 yards to the Hun 45, but on the following play, Lopez jumped in front of the pass and returned the ball 60 yards for the touchdown, to put PC in front, and the two-point conversion pass was complete to Lopez, making it 22-16 with seven minutes left. Hun moved the ball, with Prock completing passes to Douglas for 27, 21, and 16 yards to give the Raiders a first-and-goal on the 4. A 1-yard pass, followed by three incomplete passes, gave the ball to the Paladins. They ran out most of the clock and took the safety on fourth down. 

Comments: Paramus Catholic was resilient; they won the fourth quarter and the game. Lopez was a big factor with his interception return for a touchdown, his two-point conversion catch, his 27-yard completion that set up the previous touchdown, and another first-down reception on the same drive were all clutch. Rashawn Mangan was in on several sacks on defense. While Snee did not have a great night passing*, he was efficient running and avoiding a few sacks with his legs. His passes on the first fourth-quarter touchdowns show how good a passer he can be. Odoh ran for 62 yards on 15 carries; many were well earned. The Paladins’ defense held Hun to 42 yards rushing by my estimate, and did a good job of forcing two field-goal attempts; one they blocked and the other was missed. Many overlook that this is a good football team that plays a brutal schedule. 

*Neither quarterback was great passing tonight. I don’t know if the wind was a factor.  

As for Hun, they had mixed results. Defensively, they were fine. They played well, and several defenders closed quickly on tackles. I was impressed by Briehler and linebacker Jake Broggi. On offense, their line couldn’t block for the run; Locker ran hard and had yards when he could. Prock is a top quarterback who was overthrowing receivers early, and his receivers did him no favors by dropping numerous passes. The air game was better when Douglas played – he missed time with what appeared to be an ankle injury. They are a good football team that could have won but didn’t; it was a game of missed opportunities against a good football team.
