Post 162 – HS Football – Bull Session – Week 8

The state playoffs are upon us this weekend and lets hope the rain holds off Friday night.  Teams will be ecstatic or heartbroken after the games and in the end, only one team can win each sectional title.  This year, it goes one step further: bowl games. The two sectional winners in the north play one another (sections 1 and 2), while the two sectional winners play one another in the south (south and central)……….There has been controversy in seeding the playoffs this year with the addition of the Born Power Index.  I gave my thoughts in yesterday’s article: Post 161……….Two weeks back, I mentioned some of the good telecasts that can be found on Youtube.  A highlight package worth watching is Sayreville and St. Joe’s (Metuchen) from Joe Diamonds.  They usually run 10-15 minutes and I get the feel of the game with the audio.  Another is Jersey Sports Zone, which goes around the state ………..On one of those highlight packages, I saw a class act performed by Sayreville’s Antwan Golson.  On the final play against Edison, one of the officials fell down and it would have been understood if Golson celebrated with his teammates.  But before doing that, he helped the official back on his feet……….One of the good things in the weeks leading up to the playoffs is the NJIC playoffs of division winners.  Last week’s championship between Hasbrouck Heights and Rutherford had many entertaining moments, a game won by Heights.  Perhaps the most memorable one was the one-handed catch by Jasiah Purdie in the corner of the end zone ……….It is unusual to see Cherokee being winless at this point in the season……….Uniform front – The Good:  North Brunswick wearing their all-royal blue and yellow, giving them a nice, classic look.  The Bad:  Lakeland’s away uniform with the red numbers that have white trim followed by another red trim.  It’s as if someone did not finish the number or the number is out of focus Similar to the numbers on the Dallas Cowboy road uniforms………..With so many teams making the playoffs, it becomes a challenge to find a potentially good game.  I have my games I am planning to see in North Jersey this weekend, but games in the Central and South Jersey I would like to see are Manalapan at Hunterdon Central, Edison at South Brunswick, Jackson at Brick, Middlesex at Florence, and Cedar Creek at Pleasantville ………. Union vs. Elizabeth could turn out to be a good game, but it is not the big game in New Jersey that it was over twenty years ago………..Some criticize consolation games, but I have no problems with them.  It gives teams a chance to win against a similar team and it gives the players one more chance to play in a high school football game………..Pet Peeves: student sections singing the National Anthem bothers some, but I find them heckling players more often than they used to.  Maybe I didn’t notice as much in years past, but if this keeps happening, that can’t be a good thing……….New Brunswick and Scotch Plains-Fanwood, teams that had one win between them entering last week, played a high-scoring 59-44 game won by New Brunswick……….While I did think Ramapo could beat Randolph, I didn’t expect them to win by a 42-0 score.  ……….Speaking of Randolph, I will be seeing them against Colonia this Saturday night after I see Sparta vs. Lakeland in the afternoon……….I have not made my mind up on Friday night and I think the weather will play a factor……….That’s it for this week; I will be back next week with some more bull!
