Post 115 – HS Football – Bull Session Week 2

There were some high scoring games this past weekend, with Cedar Grove beating Hanover Park, 69-67, and Mahwah beating Mountain Lakes, 49-48 in double overtime.  They sound more like basketball scores……….When it comes to football in New Jersey, I don’t think it gets any worse than the beating Rutgers took from Kansas.  When I heard the score without knowing who won, I figured Rutgers had a breakout game, only to discover it was Kansas who won, 55-14.  Not only that, they rushed for 400 yards and had over 500 yards of total offense. I wonder what a high school senior who verbally committed to them is thinking.  Better yet, a senior who is considering them may be crossing them off the list……….Last week I mentioned how good it was to attend a Shore Conference game; this week I will mention how I enjoy the experience of going to a high school game in Hudson County.  While the overall quality may not be as good, there is always something unique about going there with the surroundings.  It also has the well-deserved reputation of craziness. When the Memorial-Union City game was coming to an end, the PA announced that fans of Union City would leave first and Memorial fans would stay put until Union City fans left……….With so many programs experiencing low numbers, I wonder if there is an increase in co-op programs.  How much longer can programs last with 25 players, including freshmen?……….Manalapan has been experiencing last-minute heartbreakers: a 15-14 loss to Toms River North with 47 seconds left and a 17-14 loss to Middletown South on a game-winning field goal with time expiring.  If they come overcome these losses, they can still be heard from, come playoff time……….If someone asked me who I thought was going to win last week’s Bergen Catholic-St. Peter’s Prep game, I would have said Bergen.  Not only did they not win, they were beaten badly by Prep and it looks like Maasai Maynor had an outstanding evening at quarterback.  Keep in mind, he has verballed to attend the United States Naval Academy.………Paramus scored on the first play from scrimmage, the fifth play, and had a 28-0 lead with four minutes left in the first quarter……….Penns Grove had a big program win with their 19-6 win over Paulsboro and received payback for losing in the state final last year……….One difference I see when going to South Jersey is the the fact that they have a lot more grass fields.  Some of that may have to do with having a lot more property and not having to practice on the field itself……….This is a different year for the playoffs in New Jersey with sections not being determined until the week before the playoffs and having a “bowl game” after the sectional finals, with North 1 winners vs. North 2 winners and South vs. Central.  This is the next step, I think, towards having a true state champion in the public school groups and I expect to see it within five years……….Uniform frontThe Bad: Wood-Ridge unveiling their all-black uniforms against Emerson when they are called the Blue Devils.  They wear blue in most of their games and they should not be wearing black; I don’t care if the kids like it or not, you wear your school colors……….I’ll be back with some more bull next week.
