Union City scored early and often, beating Memorial 49-0.
It was 28-0 less than one minute into the second quarter. Jean Alvarez scored the first two touchdowns from approximately two and five yards each. Union City had a touchdown on an interception called back, but the Soaring Eagles scored on a 19-yard run by number-19, Tyheem Black. Abdiel Ramos scored early in the second from a yard out, set up by his five-yard run on the previous play. A 19-yard pass from Alain Diaz to Yerandi Berroa made it 35-0 and a long run by Alvarez on the last play of the half made it 41-0.
The second half was played on a running clock and Union City had their backups in, scoring late. It was so bad for Memorial that on the extra point, the snap was either bad or mishandled, but Union City picked up the ball and ran it in for two points.
Union City came out and methodically marched for their scores. There were no long runs or passes until the last play of the half. They weren’t sharp, but they were effective. They did get sloppy in the second quarter, but it didn’t matter.
Memorial is struggling. All they can do is work at improving and beating Kearny next week. The two point play at the end of the game summed it up for them. Their biggest play might have been a blocked extra point and I am not trying to be funny. If anyone stood out, it was running back Jason Donneys; who is very short, 5-5 at best, but he is tough. While he wouldn’t see the field at the Catholics, I admire the way he plays – running hard and aggressive, a player John Madden would appreciate.
