Bergen Catholic built up a 21-0 halftime lead and held off a hard-nosed Archbishop Wood (Pa.) team to win, 21-7.
The Crusaders got on the board when Andrew Boel avoided Archbishop Wood pressure to find a wide open Pierson Tobia for a 42-yard touchdown. Boel then scored the first of his two one-yard touchdowns in the second quarter. The score was set up by a fabulous 14-yard run by Rahmir Johnson on the previous play, carrying tacklers while running straight ahead. His second was set up on a 33-yard pass to Garrett Cody.
Archbishop Wood showed in the second half that they were not going to quit, consuming much of the clock. They scored late on a 4-yard run by Tom Santiago in the fourth quarter.
Bergen controlled the first half in building a 21-0 lead. Boel showed poise on this touchdown pass to Tobia and made good decisions, Cody had a good game receiving, making some nice catches, along with Amar Gist and Tyler Devera. Aeneas DiCosmo and Jordan Morant made their presence known defensively.
Archbishop Wood showed great heart and though outplayed, they made BC work for their success. Bergen had difficulties running between the tackles due to the Wood defense. They are one of those teams that I would love to see Bergen play on a yearly basis.
