Bull Session Week Three
October 3, 2025
I went to see Bogota host Weehawken last night, not expecting anything, and it turned out to be a great game with Bogota winning 61-60 in double overtime. It was two Group 1 teams that entertained everyone there. I don’t remember any turnovers in the game, either. Defense was non-existent, but it was fun to watch. My father always told me it doesn’t have to be the two best teams that can play a great game. Hats off to both teams who played their hearts out. Check out the highlights on Jersey Sports Zone….I was at Bergen Catholic-Don Bosco, although I did not cover it. It was a good game, but I have never seen a worse or more chaotic sideline than the one that night. The stands, which seat 5,500, according to a former principal, were full, as were the two small stands behind one end zone for the Bosco student body. But the other end zone had a gate open, and there had to be at least 1,000 spectators covering one end of the Bergen sideline, behind the end zone, and one half of the Bosco sideline; maybe as many as 2,000 spectators. Moving around was challenging, and there were always people in the way. It was not a fun experience for me and others who cover the game or are regularly on the sideline. For this, I blame Don Bosco itself….. I saw a clip of the Virginia upset of Florida State, when the last play was an incomplete pass into the end zone. At that point, Virginia’s students and fans stormed the field and trampled over the Florida State receiver. Luckily, the player was injured, but generally OK. But this nonsense of students storming the field has to stop. How long before someone dies or is paralyzed from this? …..Another thing I wish would stop, but probably won’t, is a team immediately running towards the student body after a win, instead of being on the handshake line. Bosco is the guilty party, but they are not the only ones; Bergen of Joe’s or St. Peter’s Prep, and others do the same thing. Go to the handshake line, shake hands, and then proceed to the student body…..A phrase many announcers use on a broadcast is “positive yardage.” Many plays gain some yards, and I don’t see the need for “positive yardage.” Just say the players gained yardage; a loss of yards has always been explained….Now that I have been in touch with my inner bitch, let’s move on…..One hot freshman duo in New Jersey is quarterback Rahmir Rivera and running back Gabe Kemp at Red Bank Catholic…..A hot rookie duo could be the Giants’ quarterback Jaxson Dart and running back Cam Skattebo. Both bring an attitude that has been missing with the G-men…..Some of the top performances that caught my eye, courtesy of nj.com. I do my best not to put someone in two weeks in a row.
