Woodbridge 28 Summit 17
October 19, 2024
Woodbridge scored two quick touchdowns and battled Summit the rest of the way for a 28-17 victory, keeping themselves undefeated at 8-0.
First Quarter: After a Summit punt, Woodbridge came out with the ball on their 20. Josh Allen gained 36 yards on a jet sweep down the right sideline to the Summit 44. The Barrons then picked up four consecutive first downs – all runs, including the touchdown, a 10-yard run by Allen. Summit was forced to punt on the following possession and their punter bobbled the snap, lost the ball, and Woodbridge recovered on the 10-yard line. Three plays later, Jahmir Beal scored on a 2-yard run, giving Woodbridge a 14-0 lead with a minute left in the quarter. Oscar Marx returned the ensuing kickoff for a 91-yard touchdown, but the extra point was unsuccessful, making it 14-6.
Second Quarter: Woodbridge moved the ball and picked up three first downs, a 3-yard run by quarterback Derek Anderson, and passes of 20 and 16 yards to Izaiah Toliver and Bryan Anderson, respectively. But they turned it over on downs on the 30 when Summit’s Zach Allen broke up a pass. Summit drove down the field with a key play being a 34-yard pass from Cole Sabol to Gavin Schnall to the 23. The Hilltoppers scored on a 21-yard field goal by Sam Morris to make it 14-9 with two seconds left.
Third Quarter: After a Woodbridge punt, Summit started on their 44. Two 4-yard runs by Henrique Guicardi sandwiched around an incomplete pass brought up a 4th-and-2 on the Woodbridge 48. The Hilltoppers went for it, but Sabol fell one yard short and Woodbridge had the ball. The Barrons immediately took advantage when the Anderson twins hooked up, Derek found Bryan for a 53-yard score, making it 21-9. Summit picked up a first down on a 14-yard pass to Connor Gawronski to the Woodbridge 49. A fourth down came up again with Sabol falling a yard short a second time after being flushed out of the pocket. A 12-yard run by Derek Anderson and an 11-yard run by Zackaryus Guzman brought the ball to the Summit 33. The Barrons capped it off with a 9-yard pass to Daunte DiFonzo in the end zone on the fourth quarter’s first play.
Fourth Quarter: Summit scored late when Ethan Lawton scored on a 3-yard run with one minute left.
Comments: Woodbridge looked as if they were going to blow Summit out when it was 14-0 in the first quarter, but the game settled down. Head Coach Joe Goerge mentioned there may have been some complacency after that point; they will work on that. Nonetheless, he thought it was a good sign they could still win without playing their best at times and they are doing a good job overall, putting in the time. The team has explosiveness and their defenders move forward, willing to meet the ball carrier.
Summit stayed in the game as much as they could. Two situations that hurt them were the bobbled punt snap, that Woodbridge recovered on the 10 and the failed fourth down, immediately followed by the Anderson-to-Anderson 53-yard touchdown. One player who had a good day was Marx, who caught five passes for 73 yards.
